The main uses of carbon brushes

1) Application in motors

Motor carbon brushes are devices that transmit energy or signals between the fixed and rotating parts of a motor or generator or other rotating machinery. Its function is to add external current (excitation current) to the rotating rotor (input current) through the carbon brush, so that the motor can operate normally.

In commutator motors, the brushes also play a commutation role and can change the direction of the current.
Carbon brushes are also used on the commutator or slip ring of the motor as a sliding contact for exporting and incoming current.

2) Application in grounding protection

The grounded carbon brush can output current and introduce the static charge on the large shaft into the earth through the carbon brush to protect the equipment from static electricity hazards.

The carbon brush can also lead the large shaft (ground) to the protection device for grounding protection of the rotor and measuring the positive and negative voltage of the rotor and the ground voltage.
